Our history

Who We Are

VP - Activities

Julia Lotvin

1930s – The club begins and begins establishing itself as one of the oldest and influential chapters across the country.

1960s – One of the earliest iterations of the Annual Reception takes place at the Capital Hilton with Earl Warren, Dean Rusk, and Robert McNamara among attendees.

1983 – The club honors Norman Minetta for his work in supporting its efforts.

2011 "Sproul in Washington" event draws an hundred alumni to Capitol Hill, featuring then U.C. Berkeley Chancellor Birkenau.

2014 –

After one of the most active years in club history with 105+ events, the club relaunches its modernized website and co-hosts U.C. President Janet Napolitano. The club simultaneously wins the prestigious $2,000 scholarship award from the Capital Alumni Network (CAN) for its work across all areas, including community service and alumni dev't.

Today, the club is expanding to new heights following the COVID-19 pandemic.

A retired attorney for the District of Columbia, Mike brings a lot of experience to the club as former president. A wine aficionado, Mike has organized many a winery tour replete with tastings.

A Santa Barbara-native, Carlile came to the nation's capital to pursue public policy after graduating in 2021. She landed in Capitol Hill, working for U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, and now works for U.S. Senator John Fetterman. After work, Carlile enjoys jewelry-making, letting loose with friends over dinner or a game of volleyball.

Director - Young Alumni

Valeria Sandoval

Allie coordinates the Club's numerous athletic teams, including softball, flag football, and soccer.

Director - Family Friendly

Sylvia Cabus

Valeria is a Legislative Aide for Congressman Lou Correa. Prior to working on Capitol Hill, she worked in immigration advocacy, primarily assisting folks with DACA applications and immigration related issues. She received her Bachelors from the UC Berkeley in political economy and minored in public policy. She was born and raised in Orange County, California with roots from Zacatecas, Mexico.

A mirror image of our illustrious alma mater, the club is comprised of alumni of all backgrounds and walks of life, and is as diverse as the world itself.

From Capitol Hill to Federal Triangle, and the National Institutes of Health in MD to the Smithsonian Institutes on the National Mall, our club is proud to represent several hundred prominent alumni who are well-accomplished in the D.C. world of politics and beyond.

As one of the oldest chapters within the greater California Alumni Association, our club is also among the largest outside of California. It is estimated that over 10,000 alumni reside in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, thanks in large part to the university's historic ties to the nation's capital, including Cal in the Capital and the Manhattan Project.

Treasurer

Steven Lee

Julia moved cross country to attend UC Berkeley and brought lots of school spirit back to the East Coast after graduating in 2021. She works in the U.S. House of Representatives. After work, she volunteers for the Columbia Heights chapter of Back on My Feet, loves to sing karaoke, bake, and bike around town.
